Special School Board Meeting

A special school board meeting was held on October 8, 2009 and discussion was held regarding the following items: the status of the operating levy and shortfall of revenues to finance current operations into the future; the over-capacity of the buildings and possible solutions; holding a community forum to inform the community of the financial status and building capacity issues; items for discussion with the City of Delano including growth projection, joint survey, School Resource Officer Agreement and snow removal agreement; and filling Sam Nelson’s seat on the school board.

If the buildings are all over capacity why does the school district keep accepting open enrollment students from other districts? I don't want to be another Orono district that builds in order to keep recruiting and advertising for more open enrollment students.

The school district that has a policy, in accordance with state law, that provides that "the School Board may adopt a resolution limiting the number of nonresident students...to the lesser of (a) one percent of the total enrollment at each grade level..." This allows for two students at each grade level. For this year we had eight students in grades 1-12 meeting that criteria. The school board did not put that limitation on kindergarten because there are some non-resident families who have children in grades 1-12 and we didn't want to split those families between school districts.

The school board is very sensitive to the admission of non-resident students for the very reasons you stated and we will be looking at tightening this up even more in the future.

I have been stating at Chamber meetings and to realtors that if people want to enroll at Delano Schools that tney need to live (buy a house)in the district.

I totally agree with not splitting families between 2 districts and with strict limitations in Grades 1 - 12. However, I would like to see the Kindergarten open enrollment be limited to siblings of current students only. Let's not encourage any more families to leave their home school districts. They can move to Delano and pay Delano school taxes or improve the district they live in now.
